Can you say “Eejits”?

Apparently, there are some Democrats who do not want Barack Obama to become president. Although they look young, according to the snippet that keeps running on TV, I can only assume they are independently wealthy and will not be harmed at all by a McCain presidency. I, on the other hand, am not independently wealthy. I am a hard working small business owner who loves the planet and low inflation and a sound economy.

Who cares that Hillary wasn’t picked as veep? She didn’t want to be veep anyway. If you’re ready for real change, then you’re ready for someone other than the Bushes and Clintons in the White House. Make up your mind.

I guess I should be thanking Mr. Bush. Because of the horrible ethical example he and his administration set in our capital and the horrible state of the economy due to the war he lied to get us into, I can buy a house at an unbelievably cheap price. Unfortunately, any house I buy is stained with bad foreclosure mojo from the poor hard-working person who owned it before me. It is a time for opportunists. Most people are only buying for investment right now - getting deals of the century. The don’t care about the bad mojo. I, however, will do an aura cleansing of my house and wish better luck on the previous owner in the future.

The American dream - owning a home - has turned into the American nightmare. Both individually and as a nation, we are in trouble. If you can’t see that we are in trouble, then you have too much money and are disconnected from the experience of the average American.

Please America, do not f*&% this up again. We may not get another chance.

Looking for a home is a lot like dating. Very time consuming, an emotional roller coaster, lots of disappointment, all the good ones are taken…

I’m hoping the ride is over this week, and I’m keeping my fingers and toes crossed. I feel bad that I am benefiting from the foreclosure of another, but I figure someone is going to buy the house and it may as well be me. And I know *some* (not all) people bought a house that they really knew down deep in their heart of hearts was too expensive for them. I feel doubly bad that the bank permitted them to buy it, thus validating their rationalizations that they could afford it. Everyone was at fault and no one was a winner. Except me.

I hope to soon share with you photos of my new abode. Once all the paperwork is done, and I’m sure it’s mine. It ain’t fancy, but that wasn’t my goal. My goal was clean, sturdy and in a good neighborhood. THAT is the American dream, my friends. Something to call your own that doesn’t make your life hell by owning it. I just want my little piece of dirt. Really, I’m doing it all for Phoebe. I feel bad moving her all over. She’s already moved twice in the last two years. It will be her house, not mine. I actually considered her needs when looking at houses. No one wants a miserable cat living with them! (Although some would argue that all cats are miserable!) She may have to wait a few months for some outdoor space as there is currently no lanai. It is top on my list, though, and she can settle into the indoor parts of the house until then.

Check me out in the September issue of Biz941 Magazine. I was asked for my expertise on networking. Also, I was delighted to see that Jeanne Corcoran, Director of the Sarasota County Film & Entertainment Office, who was also interviewed listed Women With Moxie mixers as one of her favorite places to network! Thanks, Jeanne!

Absence

Did it make your heart grow fonder? I know, I know… I’ve been putting off my blog duties. A lot is going on. For one thing, I’m house hunting, which, despite what you might think, is not fun. It was fun for a few weeks, and now it’s just frustrating and disappointing. I’m giving it another few weeks before I give up.

Another disappointment… my relationship. It’s kaput. I’m practically over it, though. The end has been months in the making. I’m looking forward to moving onward and upward.

Business is great, though! And Women With Moxie is taking over the planet! So, I’ve got lots to be thankful for.

Election is getting closer… looking forward to hearing who the Veep is going to be. Also, anxious for the new Honda hydrogen vehicle to make its way to this coast. Looks a bit pricey, but I’m fascinated that they want to help produce a home generating station for the hydrogen that would also save on home heating/cooling costs. Now THAT is innovation and progress.

I’m almost a little disappointed that we were spared by Fay… I have two weeks worth of food and the baddest ass emergency kit on the block. Sometimes it’s nice to be dragged back in time when there were no lights or internets.

Don’t you hate it when you get put on a list? You don’t have any idea how you got there. Did someone sell my email address? Did they just take it off my website? Either way, you’re now on ANOTHER FRICKIN’ LIST that you don’t want to be on. So, of course, the perpetrator puts their little ‘opt out’ message at the bottom of the email, but what happens when you follow their opt out directions 5 times and they still don’t remove you from the list? Well, Watermark has done this to me. Not only did I not ask to be added to their list, but after 5 polite yet desperate pleas, they still cannot manage to remove my email address from their database. Perhaps it is a case of complete and utter ignorance - perhaps they really do not know how to remove my name. If this is the case, they should not HAVE a database. Otherwise, they’re just being dicks.

In case you don’t know, Watermark is Florida’s Distinctive Gay and Lesbian Publication. I think they have a print publication and an online version.

The folks at Watermark apparently do not have any interest in REAL marketing efforts. I still liked them after I asked the first time. Although I was not interested in advertising with them, I support what they do. I don’t advertise at all, in fact, so their product just doesn’t apply to me. But now, after the 5th time, I am angry and frustrated and they are no longer on my Christmas card list.

Watermark, could you PLEASE STOP SPAMMING ME? I have asked nicely, but you either simply will not listen or I need to come over to your office and do it my frickin’ self.

Beer roundup

I wonder what the effect will be on Cindy McCain’s bottom line when our cherished Budweiser is purchased by Belgian brewery, InBev. I wonder how much of the $82 billion will go to her and her family.

Apparently the [cheap] beer industry is in peril:

Even without the merger, Anheuser-Busch said last month it planned to cut pension and health benefits for salaried employees as part of an effort to slash $1 billion in costs by the end of 2010. The plan called for offering early retirement to 1,300 salaried workers 55 and older.

The cost-cutting effort was part of a strategy to fend off the merger. Anheuser-Busch also owns a 50 percent share in Grupo Modelo, Mexico’s leading brewer, and a 27 percent share in China brewer Tsingtao.

The beer industry has been consolidating in recent years amid rising costs for transportation fuel, aluminum for beer cans and key ingredients such as hops.

This goes back to exactly what I’m reading in Fermenting Revolution - the industrial revolution lead to a push toward making beer more cheaply and thus diminishing its quality and its value in society as a source of health and community.

Take my advice - drink micro-brewed beer. The more local, the better.

Firefox… what have you done?

Firefox, I’m a little peeved at you. You’ve been crashing on me a lot since I upgraded to Vista, and we need to have a serious talk. I can’t have you just dying on me every 5 minutes in the middle of important work that I’m trying to get done… or even cool internet shit I’m trying to view/read/enjoy. Please, for the love of Dog, get the help you need to fix your issues. We can’t go on like this. Don’t make me go back to Internet Explorer… he’s been wooing me ever since you and I got together. Once in a while, I have to visit him to see what a website looks like. I swear that’s the only reason. But if you continue with your present behavior, I’ll have no choice but to go knocking on his door more often. I might even… migrate my bookmarks back to his house. I’ve seen all the things others have written about you online… it’s not pretty. Your reputation is going to be suffering if you don’t turn things around, and I’m not sure I want to be around when things get really ugly. Call me.

This song is a few years old, but apparently Pink wrote it just for GW to tell him what she thought of him. In this YouTube video, someone added images to the song.

Life… what’s it about?

Wednesday, July 2nd, 2008 just life | No Comments »

A very good friend and client who will one day be famous worldwide was holding onto my feet yesterday and said this:  “Life is about two things - being happy and learning.  If you’re not doing those things, something’s wrong.”  I thought that was the most profound thing I’d heard recently.  I will be thinking about that for a while.
